Art Displays at LCHBA
CAPA members' artworks are now on display at the Las Cruces Home Builders Association's new building at 2825 N. Main Street. Display consultant Maya Hartman directed the hanging of the works by more than 27 local artists. Richard Hummel from the LCHBA says the group is allowing CAPA to display art in their building in order to support the arts in this area. He says there will be a lot of exposure from members of the HBA, builders, newcomers to this area, and events will be held at the facility. While they are building was not designed to be an art gallery, it will be available to rent for art receptions.

The Barricade Project (posted 08-08-08)
City of Artists has worked diligently with the City of Las Cruces to produce the Barricade Project.  CAPA members, led by artist and project designer Tony Pennock, have begun to hang art panels on the fence surrounding the building site. The panels, painted by CAPA artists and community members, will beautify the fence for the next one to two years, according to CAPA President Rebecca Courtney.

“CAPA is very grateful for the cooperation we have received from city officials.  They have shown a true interest in supporting the arts," Courtney said.

Carol Lopez, Barricade Project chairperson and past president of CAPA, initiated the project two years ago and secured a capital outlay grant from the State of New Mexico to help fund the project.  Local legislators recognized the value of the project to the community and worked with Lopez to ensure the request was granted. City Manager Terrence Moore has also worked cooperatively with CAPA to develop the project. Newman Outdoor Advertising donated the vinyl material for the panels.

The photos of the project shown on our website indicate that school children through professional artists want to participate.  Approximately half the panels are up for viewing according to project designer Tony Pennock.  They will eventually be separated by black panels to frame out each “picture.”

New Show at the Cottonwood Gallery (posted 08-07-08)

New Show at the Cottonwood Gallery

The Cottonwood Gallery in the Southwest Environmental Center, 275 North Downtown Mall, proudly presents “Our Enchanted Environment,” the art show for August given by the City of Artists Promotional Association.  As the Southwest Environmental Center focuses “on the changes people can make to bring their lives and communities in balance with the natural world,” this member show provides a variety of works that interpret the value and effect of living in the southwest.  The artists will show paintings, photography, sculpture and other three-dimensional works of art that are appropriate for all ages.  The show at the Cottonwood Gallery will run through the month of August and can be viewed each weekday at SWEC.

Donations needed for SWEC's silent auction
The annual SWEC fundraiser is scheduled for October 11th. The planning committee is hard at work to make this the best-ever event with good food, entertainment, and fun things to bid on to further support the cause. We are seeking donations of an item or item(s) that we may add to the silent auction. We are targeting items that have a retail worth of between $50--$200. Feel free to be creative--we are open to suggestions. Here are some items that have sold well in the past.

Artworks: We are soliciting artworks that are smaller in size and reflect a river or nature theme. These sell well and are very popular. In addition, offers to do portraits (pet/people), "art objects" that are both lovely and utilitarian (dishes), weavings
Services: Photo shoots, pet services, personal hair cuts/styling, massages, pet sitting, window cleaning, clean-up, hauling, oil changes, lessons (art, pottery, etc.).
Gifts: Small items that will make a larger gift basket, jewelry, textiles
Splurges: Week-end getaways, meals at restaurants, timeshare time
Goods: Gift certificates at local business establishments for food items, clothing, office supplies, household items, etc.
Antiques: Small items of interest.
Please contact one of the Chairwomen for this event:
